Simple and clean is the way to be. Unless you are absolutely certain it will make your presentation better, best to leave it alone and use the time you save practicing your delivery!

If you must use a transition, use a quick transition so that you can get on with the presentation. As for the sound, I generally would agree with you to turn it off.
I have seen only one instance in which the sound was not distracting. Considering the number of Power Point presentations I have seen, that is a very small percentage.
